A Sustainable Val di Non

Where sustainability is a daily choice

The Val di Non is a place of outstanding natural beauty and a living laboratory of sustainability. Here, a commitment to environmental protection, a high quality of life and responsible development is not a recent trend, but a vocation deeply embedded in farming culture and the forward-thinking vision of its communities.

For years, the valley has invested in innovation, renewable energies, responsible agriculture and conscious tourism. From cultivating the famous Melinda apples to providing green hospitality, protecting biodiversity and developing technological projects in the mines, every initiative tells the story of a land looking to the future while never forgetting the value of its roots.

Thanks to the efforts of various public and private stakeholders, the most extensive valley in Trentino is writing a story of balance, respect, and passion for its land.

Melinda: an unwavering dedication to sustainability across all domains

The Consorzio Melinda is a symbol of sustainable agriculture in Trentino. The Consortium represents a virtuous model. It shows how sustainability can be integrated into agricultural production. It can also be integrated into industrial and social processes. Melinda is at the heart of a supply chain that recognises the efforts of local producers and safeguards the environment.

One of the most significant innovations is the use of underground warehouses: large spaces excavated in the Rio Maggiore dolomite caves where apples are stored in ideal conditions, making use of the underground temperature. This solution has enabled a 30% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional warehouses and demonstrates the sustainable recovery and reuse of existing structures.

Melinda has also invested in renewable energy by installing photovoltaic panels and using hydroelectric power to cover the energy needs of the entire production process. These choices demonstrate a genuine and ongoing commitment to environmentally friendly agriculture that respects biodiversity and future generations.

The 'Intacture, The Natural Home of Data' project

Another pioneering initiative born in Val di Non is 'Intacture', Europe's first data centre to be built in a cave, specifically the Rio Maggiore Mine. Combining technological innovation and environmental sustainability, this project exploits the mine's stable and naturally cool conditions to reduce energy consumption and ensure data security. Intacture is a good example of how the area can also play a leading role in the digital economy, in a way that is good for the environment and using the latest technology.

The ambitious goal is to establish a cutting-edge digital infrastructure. This will be integrated into the territory and have a minimal environmental impact. The plan also involves developing an innovation hub. Research and development will be integrated into strategic application fields such as life sciences, artificial intelligence, energy transition and cybersecurity. Construction and infrastructure work is already in progress, with the data centre scheduled to start operation in 2026.

Protecting biodiversity in apple orchards

A recent study by the MUSE - Trento Science Museum confirmed the importance of good agricultural practices in protecting biodiversity. Over 80 bird species have been recorded in the apple orchards of Val di Non, many of which are considered bio-indicators of the health of agricultural ecosystems.

This is the result of farmers' efforts to limit pesticide use, maintain uncultivated green spaces, and promote land management that is in balance with nature.

Sustainable tourism development projects

The future of tourism in Val di Non also hinges on a shared vision of sustainable development. In collaboration with the neighbouring ApT Val di Sole and with the support of the BIM dell'Adige, the ApT Val di Non (tourism board) presented a series of projects dedicated to topics such as trekking, food and wine, music, art and community education for the three-year period 2023-2025.

The aim is to promote authentic experiences that encourage active community participation and environmental protection, thereby enhancing the area's natural and cultural resources.

Lastly, Val di Non is involved in the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST) through the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, part of which is located in the valley.

The EUROPARC Federation's award recognises dedication to encouraging tourism that is in harmony with the preservation of natural resources, the involvement of local communities and the accountability of visitors.

It is a shared path that focuses on the quality and durability of the experiences offered in the area.
